Is your daily driver a dry lakes racer? Or is you dry lakes racer a daily driver? Matt Winters 1929 Roadster is both; it braves the dangers of LA traffic and makes runs to the lakes with equal ease. Rules of land speed racing requiring modern safety equipment and a strong commitment to keep his roadster to traditional equipment only have conspired to keep Matt out of the official time traps. However rumor has it the roadster does pretty well in clandestine El Mirage speed runs, and can idle all day on a congested freeway without boiling over.
The car is at home on the track because some of its parts have seen race duty. The body came from a car that ran El Mirage in the late 40’s, ran Bonneville after 1954, and then became a drag car in the 60’s. The louvers were punched in the 40’s for speed not style. The hood came from an El Mirage racer; the 1949 and 1950 date stamps are still visible on the dzus fasteners.
